Lisa Fernandez becomes an ambassador for the RSPCA
23 April 2009
She has a dog named Atticus, worked as a volunteer for the RSPCA (right here in Malaga) "years ago" and is convinced that her love for all animals started as a baby when a dog named 'Scampi' would share her crib.
Meet the RSPCA's latest Ambassador, Mix 94.5's Lisa Fernandez.
Lisa is part of 94.5's 'The Big Couch' and her dulcett tones can be heard between 4pm and 7pm weekdays where she has rapidly established herself as one of Perth's favourite presenters with an undeniable passion for animals. "It's true that I love all animals," said Lisa. "Years and years ago I got a call from a friend about fostering a dog but in the end I fell in love with him, his name was 'Tyson', and I adopted him. he was my first rescue dog.
"I've always loved the RSPCA and what you guys do for the animals. I suppose I've always had a passion for big dogs and horses which started in my teens." Lisa explained that as a teenager she got to see first-hand some of the jobs the RSPCA has to do with animals other than cats and dogs. "I'm not sure everyone understands the work the RSPCA does with farm animals, horses and so on... Starving horses in a field, who do you call? Well it's the RSPCA and they do an amazing job."
Lisa, who will be attending this year's Million Paws Walk, said it is vital that celebrities and media personalities get involved in promoting the RSPCA because "we in the media can get the word out on really important issues such as desexing or back-yard breeding. It's so important that people are informed on these issues and for me, passing that information on means helping these animals... Which is really what it's all about."
Richard Barry, spokesman for the RSPCA in WA said: "We are blown away by Lisa's enthusiasm and passion and we're really looking forward to working with her in the future. Lisa adores animals and her knowledge about animal welfare concerns is an incredibly potent asset in the battle against cruelty and neglect. We're very lucky indeed to have her."
