Female with arrow in side stands next to her JoeyHunt for roo shooter

23 December 2009

The RSPCA has called on Western Australians to help them find those responsible for a spate of bow attacks on kangaroos in Mandurah.

The latest victim of the attacks was a young female (pictured) who was found this morning by RSPCA Inspectors in the Parklands area. Unfortunately the doe had injuries causing significant distress and the wound caused by the arrow had become infected.

The kangaroo was euthenased on humane grounds, leaving a young joey (pictured) to later join its mob without its mother.

"Yet again thugs armed with either a crossbow or a (long) bow are shooting kangaroos in Mandurah and leaving them to suffer", said Richard Barry, Spokesman for the RSPCA. "This female was first hit days ago leaving her with an agonising wound and a worsening infection which would have been excrutiatingly painful. Thankfully she was tracked by a wonderful care worker in Parklands who has been working around the clock with our Inspectors to find the wounded roos."

The news of the attacks in Parklands broke last Friday after rangers revealed that two kangaroos had been shot with crossbows. One was euthenased, the other, a six-foot male, died of its injuries.

"We are hunting for the people responsible for this and we are backed up by Crimestoppers, the Police, the Mandurah Rangers and the DEC. If I were the culprit, I'd be very scared right now as he faces a jail term and a fine of upto $50,000. Anyone who has information about these thugs should call us on 9209 9300 or Crimestoppers."
