Kangaroo dragged to its death behind a car

Kangaroo attacks shock WA

February 2 2009

The RSPCA of WA is again calling for witnesses to come forward after a week that saw three brutal attacks against kangaroos.

The incidents in Manjimup, Byford and Gidgegannup follow just weeks after another kangaroo was beheaded on a golf course in Rockingham.

“The latest incident in Gidgegannup where a young female Western grey was dragged by her feet from behind a vehicle until her internal organs spilled out has horrified everyone,” said Richard Barry, spokesperson for the RSPCA in WA.

“And on Friday two kangaroos were shot by a coward with a crossbow in Byford, one of them through the neck while she is carrying a joey. WildCare staff are still trying to tranquilize her so she can be treated for her wound.

Three Days in WA

January 29 2009                Kangaroo found hanged in Manjimup
January 30 2009                Kangaroo shot with crossbow in Byford
January 31 2009                Kangaroo dragged behind a vehicle to its death in Gidgegannup

“We are appealing to anyone who has any information about these increasingly vicious attacks on kangaroos to come forward with information no matter how seemingly insignificant.” Said Barry.

Mr. Barry said people who are protecting the cowards involved in the incidents are putting other people at risk. “There is an established link between cruelty to animals and violence to human beings with people hurting animals at a young age going on to be violent towards humans later. By not reporting those people who are committing these cowardly acts you could be putting other people at risk further down the line.”

Anyone with information relating to any of the recent kangaroo attacks is urged to call the RSPCA on 9209 9300 or by completing an online complaints form.
