Dumped and left to dieDumped...

25 January 2010

The two dogs pictured have more in common than their colour. "Hera", the five-week-old puppy on the left, was found in a cardboard box in a park. Temperatures that day were in the very high 30s. "Dixie", the 13-week-old pup on the right was tethered to a post at Burns Beach in WA in similar temperatures with no water and no shade.

"Had it not been for the concerned citizens who came to the aid of these puppies, there is no doubt they would have died from heat stress" said Richard Barry, spokesman for RSPCA WA. "It's unthinkable that someone would abandon these young animals when they have little chance of survival and on some of the hottest days we've had in recent times."

The RSPCA is calling for anyone who knows the identity of those responsible for abandoning the animals to get in touch with the RSPCA as soon as possible. "We'd obviously be very keen to speak with these people, if only to remind them that abandoning an animal, no matter what its age, is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2002."

Since their arrival almost a fortnight ago, both puppies are doing well and will soon be available for adoption and the start of a new life.
