Responsible cat ownership

Responsible cat ownership

From 1 November 2013, all cats that have reached 6 months of age must::

  • be microchipped
  • be sterilised
  • be registered with your local government
  • wear a collar and registration tag.

TheCat Act aims to reduce the impact of unwanted cats on the environment, as well as encouraging responsible cat ownership.
It will also help 'lost' cats be identified and quickly returned home.

The Act will be enforced by your local government.

The Department of Local Government has lots of useful information about the new law and responsible cat ownership.
