A big thank you to the wonderful RSPCA community!

I was recently nominated for the Western Australian of the Year awards, which are part of the Celebrate WA Festival.  I was honoured to be selected as one of three finalists for the Community Award section.

The recognition of my involvement in the community was based on my voluntary work for RSPCA, both local and national, over more than twenty years. I see this achievement very much as a team effort and recognition for all of you who care about animal welfare.  After all, I would be able to achieve next to nothing in my role as President of RSPCA WA without every one of you - so many people who have an equally important role - the RSPCA staff, the dedicated people who volunteer their time at the ‘coal face’ and provide consistent and unwavering assistance and the loyal RSPCA supporters.

I was extremely proud to have even been considered for the award, let alone make it to the finals. Although I didn't win, the feedback that I had from across the community is that animal welfare is of great importance to most people and they were glad to see me there.

Being a volunteer for the RSPCA has been a part of my life for a long time.  To those of you who also volunteer your time, you can be assured that you are making a real difference to the lives of many animals. Without a strong volunteer network we would not be able to carry out the work that we do.

So I would like to share in this honour with you all and thank the staff, volunteers and supporters for ensuring animal welfare is at the forefront of community thinking.
